Hello! My name is Isla.
I have worked at LUU since my second semester in first year, starting off as a Supervisor in Terrace, and eventually moving into the Marketing & Communications Team as a Digital Content Assisant.
LUU has done so much for me as student staff, and working here has given me so much insight into my union, my university and wider Leeds.
As a working student, it can often be hard to try to relate to your peers who don’t have to work. BUT, remember, you are not alone! Working throughout university can be super tricky.
Whether you work hospitality, retail, or an office job, there are ways to make it work for you and your social life.
My job is basically writing a good chunk of what you read on the website, in your emails, and online!
I am the Digital Content Assistant, so copywriting is a big part of what I do.
My workdays are typically the traditional 9-5, but LUU are super accommodating to my university timetable, so if I have a lecture I can typically just dip in and out.
I work with the loveliest team, especially my Co-ordinator, Mia! She is super friendly and helpful, and I am so lucky to work with so many fabulous people here. The experience I have gained working in LUU is amazing, not only for my future career, but also for learning how to navigate the professional workplace.
LUU has given me so many opportunities so far at university, and learning so much about the professional world at university felt so fitting.
As a student, I also spend lots of my time with my society!
I am a member of LUU Musical Theatre, and whether it be socials, fundraisers, or just rehearsals, I am at everything.
With the amount of support I get from LUU and the wider university community (and a whole lot of mitigating circumstances), I have found a way to make my crazy schedule work very well.
My society will soon be going to the Edinburgh Fringe, and have tons more going on in the new academic year, so check out @luumusicaltheatresociety if you want to get involved!
I am a Third Year student at the moment, and I am in the process of finishing my degree and heading to graduation!
I study BA English Literature and Theatre Studies, and will be studying my PGCE next year! This is super exciting, but I will really miss LUU. I like to stay as productive as possible by staying on campus around work and in-person classes!
Uni can’t just be all studying, work and societies. I never have any free time, and love to fill up what I have with all of my hobbies! I love to do mine/my friends nails, go out for food, sing, and watch live music in and around the city.
I recently went to a gig performed by local artists Blue Gray and Caitlin Ella in Sela Bar, and there’s live music in there almost every night!
I am a very obsessive person, and am so passionate about everything I do!
This year, I have been obsessed with using the union to the absolute max before I graduate. I use Common Ground to study, the studios to sing and perform with friends, and Co-op for my meals (particularly when there’s a deal on!) I am also an avid Fruity warrior, and absolutely love dancing to classic tunes with my friends until the early hours!
I’ve been loving my packed lunches lately, too, and have been saving so much money by making sure to bring food with me when I have a big day on campus! However, the days I forget are sometimes the best, as I have an excuse to treat myself to some of the amazing places we have on and around campus.
If you can’t tell, I absolutely love the campus that we have here at Leeds.
The beautiful buildings, green spaces, and artworks are just phenomenal, and we are so lucky to be able to spend so much of our time here.
I typically spend most of my time in and around LUU, as it’s super convenient for me with work and societies! However, I do adventure around the campus every now and then!
