Hello! My name is Sacha.
I have worked at LUU for just over two years. I used to work as a Catering Assistant, and have recently become a Catering Supervisor. LUU is the biggest part of my university experience, and I am so excited to tell you all about it!
Even though everything I do with LUU makes me the busiest bee, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Working at Old Bar is so much fun!
We have a very small team, made up of Chefs, Supervisors and Catering Assistants.
I work a lot of opening shifts, meaning I get to open and prep for the day! Our most popular meals are the chip stacks and burgers, especially on an Otley Run day- we get super busy but it’s always fun.
As a Supervisor, I give jobs out to the Catering Assistants, which is mainly LOTS of cleaning. There’s a very high hygiene standard to maintain, and LUU provided so much useful training for this and my future.
My job doesn’t just provide a great working environment; it also helps my social life.
I have met some of my best friends working at the union, across teams but especially in the kitchen. It’s so beneficial to be in a working environment of people that are so similar, but so different!
Work is often such a social environment, with low-key post-shift pints, but also big events like our work awards- The Barbies! We’re always meeting new people at work, and I love working across multiple teams, especially for the big events like Leeds Ball!
My hours are really flexible, and since I’m part of so many societies this is a necessity. It does mean that I spend most of my time in LUU, but I don’t mind! We are so lucky to have the spaces that are available to us as both students and staff.
I am in tons of societies at university, including Snowriders, Modern Dance and Musical Theatre. LUU help to fund and run all my societies, helping with both big and little concerns that we may have. In Snowriders, we can go skiing in Castleford every week, as well as a big yearly ski trip. I went to Alp D’Huez a few years ago with them and it was one of the best experiences of uni so far! They also visit Sunderland and Manchester for ski competitions for free!
In Modern Dance, we have three dance shows a year, with competition opportunities too! It is the biggest dance society at LUU, meaning there are so many members and people to get to know! They go to Barcelona every year too!
I study History at the University of Leeds, which I absolutely love.
I am currently going into my second year of university, but did a foundation year first in Arts and Humanities, meaning I’ve had to say goodbye to a lot of my friends from first year! However, the foundation year was such a great decision, and really helped me solidify my interest in History.
I hope to work in Educational Policy one day, and would love to continue working with the Union or the University in some capacity!
I spend so much of my time on campus- probably more than I do at home!
This means that, in my gaps, I have found the best places to chill on campus. I love to hang out in Common Ground and Terrace, but that goes without saying! I find it to be such a social place, and society members are always around. This means that I get to be surrounded by friends all the time, which is so handy with such a busy schedule. However, it does make focusing on uni work hard sometimes!
I like to go to the Brotherton Library when I really have to lock in, but also love the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building. It’s so underrated for a casual work environment!
I also really like having such a walkable campus with so many things to do everywhere.
I love a cafe, and Leeds really does have the best around. I love the Henry Price Cafe and Affine, in the Nexus building. They’re both nice and quiet for study time, but also do amazing pizzas for lunch with friends!
In my spare time (if I ever get any), I like to go for brunch, read, and go to socials! I am a bit of a Fruity warrior, and think it’s just the best place for a society to go. I always have the most fun at Fruity, while feeling a lot safer than lots of other clubs. I’m also really looking forward to getting back to campus post-summer and trying out the LUU Book Swap!
