“LUU has consistently supported us behind the scenes. It really feels like they want us to succeed and grow.”
We interviewed Volleyball Club committee member Ramith Gajjala for their view of the support Leeds University Union gives to your Clubs and Societies.
Clubs and Societies are often viewed as one of the most important aspects of university life. Meeting likeminded, passionate people is so vital to keeping all students included and happy. Here at LUU, we have more than 350 Clubs and Socs to choose from, each one as fun and exciting as the last!
They vary from culture, to academic, to martial arts societies, so there is something for everyone.
Leeds students can help to shape how we work by taking part in the LUU Strategy Survey.
Your feedback will help to shape the work of your union to 2030.

What do you think being part of a club has done for your student experience?
Being part of the Volleyball Club has massively enhanced my university experience. It’s created an environment where I’ve been able to take breaks from academic pressures, stay active, and be part of something that feels bigger than just a club. It’s a community.
What type of relationships have you formed from your club?
I’ve formed some amazing friendships through volleyball — including people I now live with and consider really close friends. It’s a very tight-knit club, which made it so easy to feel at home from the start. I’ve also connected with people from diverse, multicultural backgrounds, which has broadened my perspective and helped me feel more connected to the wider university community.
As a fresher, did you find your club welcoming?
Absolutely! From the first ‘Give It a Go’ session, everyone was incredibly friendly and supportive. There was no pressure to be perfect — just encouragement to have fun, learn, and feel part of the club.
Do you feel like your members can make a difference in your club?
Definitely. Everyone’s voice is genuinely heard in our club — whether it’s suggesting ideas for socials, stepping into leadership roles, or simply helping at training sessions and events. There are so many opportunities to get involved, and even small contributions can have a real impact. It feels like a shared effort, and that sense of ownership really brings people together and keeps the community strong.
Does LUU make you and the club feel supported?
Yes, LUU has been great. From helping us secure venues and access funding, to promoting our events and guiding us through any admin, they’ve consistently supported us behind the scenes. It really feels like they want us to succeed and grow — and knowing that we can turn to them for help or guidance at any stage has made a big difference to how confident we feel running the club.
