Welcome to your March Student Exec update!
It’s been a month since our last update, and behind the scenes at LUU, a huge amount has been happening! From LeadLUU to International Women’s Day, it’s been jam-packed!
Over the past month, our Student Exec ,Amara, Eden, Safi, Katrina, Lydia, and Shivani, have been working hard to improve student life at Leeds, strengthen student voices, and make a real impact locally and beyond.
Here’s what they’ve been up to!
Shivani Gug- Education Officer
After 7 years, Shivani has made content note guides available across all faculties and on Minerva!
She spoke at the AI in Education Panel as part of Leeds first ever AI week which was completely student-led. She is now looking at how students want to use AI in their education.
She has also been talking to students about how they feel about student loan repayment at Leeds, and has engaged in four meetings with MPs in Parliament advocating for a better student loan repayment system!
Amara Relf- Union Affairs and Communications Officer
Amara has recently co‑lead national change with Newcastle and Liverpool Student Officers to progress the Making Misogyny a Hate Crime petition, helping to push the petition to nearly 20,900 signatures. She has also worked directly with MPs to keep gender‑based violence on the political agenda.
Amara has been working on building civic power beyond campus by beginning a Civic Engagement Strategy for LUU, focused on meaningful, long‑term engagement with Leeds as a city from local representatives to community partners.
She has also been strengthening student democracy and leadership by shaping LeadLUU, contributing to LUU’s future strategy, and has began conversations about making a better platform for student ideas to become a reality improving on our Better Forums systems.
Eden Morris – Wellbeing Officer
Eden has recently piloted “Breaking Bread” with support from the Palestine Solidarity Group, the Orthodox Christian Society, and peers including Amyra, Navneet, and February.
Eden also attended a conference in Cambridge, meeting up with many local students and organisers as both herself and Saffy continue to work on the Gaza40+ Campaign.
Eden spoke to Rachel Reeves about student loans and loan reform.
Eden also supported housing week, compiling more information on the Leeds housing market.
She also researched more into ethical partnerships, supporting student activists who are currently getting involved.
Eden and Shivani collaborated on a Sustainability Week Book Swap, in which (due to the swap’s success) they plan to make a permanent fixture.
Safiyah Farid- Equality and Liberation Officer
Saffy has recently opened cashpoints at every single till in the LUU building, fundraising for Sudan Crisis Relief.
Saffy has also recently opened Gender Expression Fund.
Katrina Liu- International and Postgraduate Officer
Katrina has been busy supporting Housing Awareness Week, as well as her ‘Passport to Culture’ stall- aimed at finding out about students’ favourite places in Leeds.
She has also continued her work with the PGR Cafe and PGR Network, supporting postgraduate researchers in building networks and communties.
Lydia Shale- Activities and Opportunities Officer
Lydia recently organised and hosted a sell-out Women in Sport Panel.
She also aided in the success of International Women’s week, where we saw thousands of students engage in a week of student-led events, conferences, training sessions, GIAGs and workshops.
