We spoke to Zach (President) and Tom (Social Media Secretary) from the University of Leeds Men’s Rugby League team.
Varsity offers a huge opportunity for our Rugby League squad, with the chance to play at Headingley bringing “higher stakes” and a professional feel to this once in a lifetime opportunity for any rugby player or fan.
The team hope that, by playing at Headingley, it helps to motivate some of their players into working harder, maybe also feeling inspired to try to play in the professional rugby world.
The team believe they perform best under pressure, are looking to use that to their advantage. With a strong season behind them, they head into Varsity ready to chase a big win!
After an unfortunate and tight loss last year despite a strong performance, the University of Leeds know that going head-to-head with Leeds Beckett will be a challenge, as last year they “were just the better team.” Their focus is to “get physical” and tire the opposition, they’re determined to “make it our game without playing into their hands.”
Men’s Rugby League are enjoying one of their strongest seasons yet!
With growth amongst the whole club; not just within the 1st Team, but with plenty of new players coming in and developing their skills.
Many players come from a Rugby Union background, and the society pride themselves on introducing them to the sport through a supportive environment.
They emphasise that anyone can join, get game time, and be part of the team. Alongside training and strength and conditioning, regular socials, including sober options, help build a welcoming culture, as well as a strong welfare and mental health support system.
Whilst the UoL Rugby League team do not have any direct connections to any professional rugby teams, they often have scouts present at games.
Within the club, some players already have professional experience, they explained that it’s always good to get to know the team around you, feeling open to ask them for advice and help.
“Going professional” is not the only option, you can also play at the top of your level on a university level.
They also hold a strong relationship with local professional team Leeds Rhinos, who call the AMT Headingley Stadium their home.
