Here at LUU, we celebrate our ever-growing number of clubs and societies. We have over 350 incredible groups to offer, so one of them is sure to be the perfect fit for you. Clubs and Societies can help shape your university experience into something that feels authentically ‘you!’, and LUU is here to help. Whether you’re into sports, media, politics or theatre, we can help to point you in the right direction!
Joining a society can be absolutely transformative for your university experience, opening doors to brand new relationships, friendships, new hobbies, and maybe even the chance to become a student leader! We spoke with Poppy Glaze, the President of Musical Theatre Society, to understand her personal experiences with being an integral part of a society.
What has being a part of a society has done for your student experience?
Poppy: My university experience so far would not have been the same without being part of MT Society. Societies, for me, create an outlet outside of lectures to occupy my brain, rather than stressing constantly about uni work, and I get to do a hobby that I’ve loved ever since I was little. This year I performed at the Edinburgh Fringe with them, which was such an incredible opportunity for the society and my future.
What type of relationships have you formed from your society?
Poppy: I have made lifelong friends, and have found some of my closest bonds through my society rather than my accommodation or course. More friends is never an issue, and I was lucky enough to meet my partner as well!
As a fresher, did you find your society welcoming?
Poppy: I found it so welcoming! It took a couple of weeks to find my feet, but with the freshers chaos that’s more than natural. Being surrounded by people similar to me, I felt I could be totally myself from the get go and free from judgement, and there were so many ways to get involved.
Do you feel like your members can make a difference in your society?
Poppy: Definitely! We really prioritise creating a safe environment for people and a close knit community for everyone to thrive and grow. Everyone in our society has a voice and is valued, and I think that’s a constant throughout so many others.
Does LUU make you and the society feel supported?
Poppy: LUU is our base! We hold rehearsals in the building, and there are two theatres decked out with everything we need. There are so many great people and teams in and around the building who are always willing to help and support us and the other societies.
How would you recommend freshers navigate Welcome Week?
Poppy: I would say to go to as many stalls and sign up to as many give it a go sessions as you can fit in! Make sure to enjoy the lovely vibes of your first week to find a community that fits you and helps you find your feet. You don’t have to ‘be’ or ‘do’ anything- uni is a time to do what you want freely!
Societies are the perfect way to find friends and likeminded people at university. Moving to a new city and being surrounded by new people can feel so daunting, but clubs and societies can really help you find your way, and find your crowd. Visit LUU and the Edge from 22-24 September for our Clubs and Societies Fair – your perfect chance to speak to clubs and committees, and find your own community at uni!
